So this week saw the turn of Chris to lead us on Magical Mystery Tour number 3. After attempting to leave the city centre, but having to take Chris’s bike to the nearest bike shop and have the gears sorted after the front derailleur wouldn’t shift, we headed east towards Reedham, thinking we would be crossing the river on the ferry..but we were sold a decoy and we then looped around back towards Acle and onwards to South Walsham and arrived at the Ship Inn another pub in the Colchester Inns Group.
The ride wasn’t without incident though, as you can see from the pictures. After the earlier gear trouble, Chris’s bike then decided that one of the crank arms looked better on the floor rather than the bike and after a bit of head scratching and beard stroking we realised this and the earlier gear incident was caused by the main crank arm not being far enough through the frame, so after a quick fix with a hammer (aka cycling shoe) everything was fine and we were on our way.
Arriving at the pub at 8:20 instead of 7:45 we enjoyed the following.
Tonight’s orders:
Nick & Mike – Chargrilled Prime Steak Burger in a Toasted Brioche Bun served with Streaky Bacon, Emmental Cheese, Gem Lettuce, Beef Tomato, Gherkin, Onion Rings, Coleslaw & Fries (we would of all had burgers, but they only had 2 left)
Ed & Chris -Local Beer Battered Cod Fillet with Hand Cut Chips & Minted Mushy Peas
The meals were very good and the portions were good sizes too. The burger was a good burger but not quite good enough to score a slot in our top 5 all time burgers. The service let the evening down a bit, maybe it was because we were late, but the service didn’t live up to what we have come to like from one of the Colchester Inns Group of Pubs.
We then rounded the evening off with a trip back along the non existent cycle path around the NDR, which was quite an experience to say the least.
